His parents were Jesse and Marion maiden unknown Buell. He attended the Lake City MN schools and the state University. He studied law at the University of Michigan and practiced Law in ST Paul MN. He came to Rapid City in April of 1889 and was in a successful law firm with CL Wood. He married Maud Mitchell daughter of WH Mitchell May 5, 1892. Twin boys were born to them January 17,1895 named Charles and William. Another son James was born October 11, 1895 and Alecia was born April 12, 1907, she married Mr Mears James was killed in the 1st World War in France and buried there. William married Theresa Bennett and they had a daughter, he married second Edna Carrico.
