Ruth Vinal Mains, 87, of 155 Waldorf Parkway died Sunday at Community-General Hospital after a long illness. Mrs. Mains was born in the town of Onondaga. She was a 1923 graduate of Syracuse University. She began her career in education as a teacher in a one-room school in South Onondaga. She later taught at the Indian Nation school and Jordan High School, retiring in 1960 from Onondaga Central School after a 35-year career. After retiring she moved to Florida, returning in 1984 to the Syracuse area. In Florida she was secretary for three years of the Pinellas County Federation of Mobile Homes. She was secretary of the Syracuse Club of mobile home owners for two years in St. Petersburg, Fla. Mrs. Mains was past matron of the Central City Chapter 433 Order of Eastern Star and past district deputy grand matron of the Onondaga District Order of Eastern Star. Her brother, Charles Warren Speich preceeded her in death. Surviving are two brothers, Harold Speich of St. Petersburg and Vernon Speich of South Onondaga; eight nieces and a nephew. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Norris Funeral Home, Marcellus, the Rev. Robert Bromfield officiating. Burial will be in South Onondaga Cemetery. Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, 33 North St. Eastern Star services are at 8 p.m. Wednesday. Contributions may be made to Dewey Vinal Sunshine Committee of the South Onondaga Methodist Church.
