On 3 Mar 1862 Major Frank joined the 3rd Ill. Cav., but was detailed by General S. R. Curtis, of Iowa, to the secret service, and served in that capacity for one year. On 4 July 1862 he was taken prisoner, court-martialed and sentenced to be shot. The authorities at Richmond, considered it unwise to proceed with the execution at this time, so issued orders to delay the sentence. This gave Mr. Johnson time to escape which he did by swimming the Arkansas River. In 1863 he was promoted to first Lieutenant of Co. B., 1st Arkansas. Inf.; soon thereafter he was commissioned as a Captain, and on 10 May 1864 he was commissioned Major. Hence the name "Major Frank".
