David Eugene "Bear" DeWitt

David Eugene "Bear" DeWitt, 60, Kokomo, died 1:44 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21, 2008, at his home. He was born at 7:37 p.m. Dec. 4, 1947, at Dukes Memorial Hospital in Peru. He was the son of Butch and Bonnie (Enyeart) DeWitt.

He is survived by his wife and best friend of 13 years, Jean (Adair) DeWitt.

David was a 1966 graduate of Peru High School. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War, serving from August of 1967 through March of 1969. Before retiring in 1999 with a medical disability (PTSD), he was employed at Haynes International for 27 years.

He was a former member of the Milwaukee Iron Motorcycle Club, as well as a life member of the VFW. He enjoyed riding his Harley and watching sports on TV.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are three sons, Brian David DeWitt, serving with the U.S. Navy in Norfolk, Va., Matthew Scott DeWitt, Monticello, and Justin David DeWitt and his wife, Holly, Kokomo; four grandchildren; two sisters, Denise Moeller, Odenton, Md., and Debbie Turnbull, Marianna, Fla.; three nieces, Cora Hamilton, Bonnie Cruea and Hayley Turnbull; an uncle, James A. DeWitt; and several cousins. "Bear" is now at rest with his God and his parents.

Funeral services are 3 p.m. Tuesday at Shirley & Stout Funeral Home, Jefferson Street Chapel, 414 W. Jefferson St., with Deacon Ron Morrow officiating and "Bear's" sister Denise delivering the eulogy. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery with military honors provided by the U.S. Army and Kokomo Military Rites Team. The family will receive friends 2 until 8 p.m. today at the funeral home and one hour before the service on Tuesday. The family requests casual dress for all attending.
