He attended Blair and Campbell Schools near Eau Claire.
When his father, John, died in 1851, about one quarter of John's property was left to his wife, Jane, who appears to have sold or deeded her portion to her son, James K., who died July 7, 1873 at 39 years of age.
James K. Hilliard's will (H-216) is on file in Butler. In his will, he repeatedly spells his name as Hilliard although he had designated his brother Daniel R. Hillard to be the executor of the will. In the ensuing paperwork filed by Daniel R. Hillard on behalf of his brother's estate, all references to James K. use the spelling Hilliard while Daniel refers to himself as Daniel R. Hillard.
James never married.
He died in Eau Claire, but we are unable to determine exactly where he is buried. He is most probably buried on the family farm.
