The son of Richard and Eleanor Pettinos Blow, he was born February 17, 1928 in Lausanne, Switzerland. He entered Lawrenceville in June 1944 and graduated in September 1945. He entered Harvard University in that month and received the degree of Bachelor of Arts in February 1948. He attended the University of Florence, Florence, Italy from March to June 1948 and University College, London University, London, England as a candidate for the Master's degree in philosophy from October to December 1948. In February 1949 he was accepted as a graduate student in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences of Fordham University where he majored in Sociology under the mentorship of Mr. John Donovan. He received the degree of Master of Arts in May 1950. His thesis was on "The Institutionalist Tradition in the History of Modern Family Sociology". As far as is known, Richard did not marry and had no children. At one time he may have expressed the interest to enter the seminary. He was a world traveler.
