Fernly Kutz was a veteran of the Spanish American War and the Philippine Insurrection, first serving as an enlisted man and then later as a lieutenant in the US Army. Afterwards he became involved in the motion picture industry as a director working for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, as well as for independent studios. A younger brother of his was Brigadier General Harry R. Kutz. Buried in Pottstown Cemetery West.
