Ruth Irene (Johns) Duckworth
Ruth Irene (Johns) Duckworth, 90, died Sunday, Dec. 14, 2003, at Community Hospital South in Indianapolis. She was a resident of Greenwood and a former resident of Charleston, Ill.
She was born Jan. 4, 1913, in Charleston, Ill. Her parents were James W. and Eva J. (Cox) Johns. She married Arnold D. Duckworth in Feb. 22, 1946. He preceded her in death Oct. 31, 1980. Survivors include a stepson, Gordon D. Duckworth of San Francisco; a grandson, Doug Duckworth; three stepgrandsons, Mike, Mark and Matt Duckworth, all of San Francisco; four stepgreat-grandsons; one stepgreat-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, Ronald Duckworth, on Dec. 4, 1992; five brothers; and three sisters.
She graduated from Charleston High School and was a 1932 graduate of Eastern Illinois State Teachers College.
She taught elementary grades at various schools in Illinois and Missouri for 14 years and was a substitute teacher for many years.
She was a member of East Harrison Street Church of God in Charleston, Ill., for many years. She also attended Edmundson Road Baptist Church in St. Louis, Mo., for 35 years and was a member of First Baptist Church of St. Ann, Mo., since 1998.
The Rev. Mike Stallons will conduct a service at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Harper Swickard Funeral Home in Charleston, Ill. Friends may call from 11 a.m. until time of service Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Roselawn Cemetery in Charleston, Ill. Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service & Crematory, Greenwood Chapel, is handling local arrangements.
