James was the fifth of seven children born to George Elliott Thompson & Emma Evaline George. The first 3 1/2 years of his life were spent in Pennsylvania. Late in 1866 his parents moved west to Aledo, Mercer, Illinois. They remained there until Nov 1869, when the family once again headed west into Iowa. The 1870 Iowa Federal census finds the family living in Linn Twp, Dallas, Iowa. By the fall of that same year, the family was homesteading 80 acres in Cedar Twp, Pocahontas, Iowa. On 22Dec1898 in Pocahontas County, James married Luella E Speilman. He remained in Iowa until his death. For most of his adult life, James was a carpenter. He was also a member of the Masonic & I.O.O.F Lodges. James & "Lulu" had three children; Fern, Evalyn Dorothy and Wayne Cyrus.
