Mr. Kunz entered the hospital last Wednesday as a surgical patient.
Mr. Kunz, a Democrat, had been engaged with Frank Barlick, Republican, in an election contest for the office of road commissioner in Springfield township. The state supreme court had ordered the two men to draw lots to decide the winner after ruling that both received the same number of votes in the April 4, 1940 election.
The drawing had not taken place at the time of Kunz' death and county officials would make no comment as to the ultimate outcome. One version was that Barlick automatically would become commissioner at Kunz' death while another suggested that attorneys for Kunz will draw the lot in the latter's behalf. If he should win, the office would be declared vacant.
Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Kunz, sr., of Springfield; wife, Anna; six sons, Edward, William, Louis, Eugene and Leroy Kunz, all of Springfield; and Arthur Junz, of San Diego, Calif.; two daughters, Mrs. Florence Galassi, of Devereaux Heights; and Maxine Kunz, at home; four brothers, George, James, and Edward Kunz, all of Springfield; and Roy Kunz, of Bloomington; and four sisters, Mrs. Clara McLaughlin, Mrs. Marie Cox and Mrs. Gladys Watts, all of Springfield; and Mrs. Tena Baldwin, of Decatur.
Remains were removed to the Ellinger & Kunz funeral home and were taken to the residence where private services were held.
Funeral services were held at Third Presbyterian church.
Burial was in Calvary cemetery.
