William J. "Bill" Kiewel, 89, of Crookston, Minnesota, died peacefully at his home, early Friday morning, November 28, 2008.

Bill was born in Crookston on October 14, 1919, the son of Leo and Gertrude (Kraus) Kiewel. He was raised in Crookston and graduated from Cathedral High School in 1937. Bill worked in radio repair and carpentry until entering the U.S. Air Force in 1942 and served in the European Theatre as a Warrant Officer helping develop radio/radar devices for combat aircraft. He was honorably discharged in 1946 and returned to Crookston. On July 7, 1951, he was united in marriage to Marion "Honey" Norrie at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Crookston. In 1948, Bill helped build the transmitting devices for KROX Radio which went on the air that year. He continued his employment with KROX Radio as a co-owner, engineer and manager until his retirement in 1983. Bill supervised the construction of Crookston Cable Television and was a part owner and consultant until selling his share in 1976. He was involved with launching KROX, Crookston Cable, Community Hospice, Community Blood Bank, Golden Link Senior Center, Home Delivered Meals and Telephone Reassurance. Bill was a charter member of the Crookston Community Theater, Toastmasters, CASA and Crookston Planning Commission. He was also a board member of the First National Bank, Villa St. Vincent Nursing Home, Crookston Library and served on the Chamber of Commerce Health Services. Bill was also very active in many community organizations to include: Rotary; American Legion; VFW; Elks; Chamber of Commerce and the Eagles. He was awarded the Torch and Shield from UMC and honored by RiverView Healthcare, National Guard and Reserve, U.S. Postal Service, Chamber of Commerce, Pioneer Days, Jaycees, Crookston City Council, Crookston Community Theater, Villas St. Vincent and Our Northland Diocese. Sadly Honey passed away on June 20, 2007. Bill will be forever remembered by all who shared in his life.

Loving family members include two daughters, Sherry (Barry) Pratt of Wyoming, MN and Kathy Romuld (Paul Marsh) of Maplewood, MN; son, James Kiewel of Fridley, MN; grandchildren, Nick Pratt, Ashley Pratt, Leah Romuld and Joey Romuld; sister, Dorothy Finkelson of Roseville, MN; and nieces, nephews and other relatives. Besides his wife Marion "Honey", Bill was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Ralph Kiewel.

The memorial service for William "Bill" Kiewel will be held at 2pm on Tuesday, December 2, 2008 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Crookston. Visitation with the family will be for one hour before the services at the church. Military honors will be provided by the Crookston Veterans Council. Inurnment will be in the Calvary Cemetery in Crookston.
