Angie A. (Johnson) Bourque, 89, wife of the late Francis N. Bourque Jr., died Saturday, Nov. 22, 2008 in Tacoma, Wash.
She was born on Dec. 4, 1918 at 17 Hammat Street, Ipswich, the daughter of Greek immigrants Thomas and Stella Johnson. She attended grammar school and the Manning High School in Ipswich from 1923 to 1935. Mrs. Bourque attended post graduate course in 1936. From 1937 to 1940 she attended Salem State Teacher College, graduating in 1940 with a bachelor's degree in education. From 1940 to 1942 she taught Business courses at Merrimac High School in Massachusetts. From 1942 to 1947 Angie was employed in Civil Service at the Navy Yard, Charlestown Army Base, Boston. From 1947 to 1948 she taught at Groveland High School.On Aug. 22, 1948 she married Francis N. Bourque Jr. Angie met her husband when she worked in South Boston commuting on the train going to work in Boston during 1947. In September 1955 daughter Sarah Frances was born. Angie substitute taught from 1952 to 1962. From 1962 until 1986 she taught part-time at Ipswich High School. In 1986 Mrs. Bourque retired after 27 years of teaching at Ipswich High School.In 1978 her husband Francis died at the early age of 55. A long-time resident of Ipswich from 1956 to 1999, Angie kept busy with church and outside activities. Angie was a member of the Rowley Baptist Church during that time. She enjoyed teaching Sunday School during vacation Bible school in the summers. After she retired in 1986, she volunteered her time assisting others in need and provided short term companion assistance to help family members with getting a few hours respite time.In her retirement she traveled with the Ipswich Golden Agers to see many sights. In 1999 she moved to Lakewood, Wash. to be closed to her daughter Sarah. From January 2000 to September 2006, Angie was a previous resident of Queen Anne Manor and Bridgeport Place and lastly a resident of Pioneer Place Alzheimer's residence in Tacoma from October 2006 to November 2008. The staff and friends and family will remember Angie for her ability to read and keep busy reading the Bible, novels and magazines.Mrs. Bourque was the surviving sibling of Judge Thomas A. Johnson, Jennie Moutevelis, Mary Pappas and Viola Palos.She leaves behind her daughter, Sarah of Lakewood; her granddaughter, Ayo of Riverside, Calif.; her son-in-law, Hakeem; and her two great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a cousin, Ronnie Goldsmith and by several nieces and nephews in the New England area; Deborah Johnson Kotsirus and husband John, Pamela Johnson, Stephanie Johnson, Thomas Johnson Jr., Dr. George Moutevelis and wife Kristen, Anthony Pappas and wife Cindy, Polly Moutevelis-Burgess and husband Paul, and Dorothy Abrams and husband Samuel.Published on November 28, 2008 - The Salem News
