George W. Dawson

George W. Dawson, 86, an early settler in this community, died after a lingering illness. He had been failing in health for a number of years and in recent months his condition had been serious. It became critical last week when he suffered two heart attacks.

He was born on Jan 6, 1863 in Newport, IN. He is the son of Charles and Elizabeth Digby Dawson. He lived in Illinois before coming to Nebraska in 1885. On March 13, 1904, he was united in marriage to Sylvia Walker of Shelton and to this union were five children. One son, Joseph Walker died in infancy, four daughters, Idamae, Birdella (Birdie), Dorothy, and Georgia (June). Mr. Dawson was engaged in farming two miles south of Shelton until 1940 when he retired and moved to town. He was a member of the I.O.O. F. Lodge and his greatest hobby was fishing. Mr. Dawson was a member of the Methodist church and when a young man he sang in the choir for many years. He was active in the affairs of the church until failing health prevented his regular attendance.

Survivors are his wife and four daughters: Idamae (Archie) Morley of Battle Ground, WA; Birdie (Rodney) Stevens, Shelton, NE; Dorothy (Albert) Wagner of Angwin, CA. and Georgia "June" (Jack) Hellander of Denver, CO. Idamae Morley was in ill health an unable to attend the funeral of her father.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Dale Westadt at the Methodist church. The pallbearers were: J.F. McRoberts, R.R. Matheson, Sr., Monsieur Badway, Victor Mortensen, Jay Mays, and W. H. Shafer. Interment was made in the Shelton cemetery and the I.O.O.F. Lodge of which he was a member, had charge of the services at the grave.
