Born Feb. 28, 1933, in Barton, she was the daughter of the late James E. Chappell and Evelyn (Russell) Chappell. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry G. Clise Sr., on Dec. 10, 1986; and a sister, Jean McElvie (1974). Mrs. Clise was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Midland, a graduate of Barton High School Class of 1951, attended Catherman's Business School, and was formerly employed with Rosenbaum's. Jerry and Martha owned and operated the Gulf Gas Station in Midland, where everyone knew them as honest, hard working friendly people. Martha was a great cook and would always can many of the vegetables that they grew in their garden.
Surviving are a son, Jerry G. Clise Jr., at home; a daughter, Nancy L. Clise, at home; two brothers, James R. Chappell and wife Marion, Calif., and Charles F. Chappell, Barton; three sisters, Shirley L. Clark and husband Leon, Kan., Gilberta M. Bradley and husband William, Barton, and Betty A. Garey, Barton; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Eichhorn-McKenzie Funeral Home, Lonaconing, on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. and on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Services will be held at the Grace United Methodist Church, Midland, on Saturday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Lawrence Frye and the Rev. John Taugher officiating. The body will be taken to the church one hour prior to the services.
Interment will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery, Moscow Mills. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Grace United Methodist Church Memorial Fund. Pallbearers will be Bobby Weber, Charles Weber, David Bradley, Jeff Bradley, Kevin Garey, and Scott Garey. Honorary pallbearers will be Mark Bradley and George Whitaker.
