ST. AUGUSTINE EVENING RECORD, St. Augustine, FL, Monday, February 28, 1927 issue

R.T. Speissegger, Pioneer Resident, Dies at Age of 70

R. T. (Richard Taylor) Speissegger aged 70, passed away Sunday morning at twenty minutes before three o'clock. The deceased was born in Charleston, S. C. August 31, 1856. He, with his mother, a brother and sister came to Mill Creek, Florida, by steamer on the St. Johns River in December, 1869. His father, Dr. T. W. Speissegger, his other brothers and a sister came a year ahead in 1868.

The late Mr. Speissegger married in 1889 and settled in New Augustine. In the fall of 1903 he moved to Moultrie near Fort Peyton. He lived there with his family for six years, and began his store at Moultrie in the fall of 1904. In the fall of 1909 he moved back to New Augustine, and opened his store there Dec. 8, 1909, after building his dwelling and his store. Previous to his mercantile career, he engaged in farming. When Mr. Speissegger first knew New Augustine there was no one living there except James Hartshaw, the ferry man, the Southwick family, and A.W. Corbett Sr., but Mr. Corbett was not considered as a resident of New Augustine, because he lived beyond Oyster Creek, south. The first property he owned in New Augustine was a lot on King Street.

R.T. Speissegger is survived by his widow (Mary Jane Hughes) and four children, R. A. (Richard Alston) Speissegger, Mamie H. Speissegger, Gladys C. Speissegger, and M. S. (Milton Sterling) Speissegger; also by three brothers, E. E. (Edwin Eugene)Speissegger, T. J. (Thomas Julius) Speissegger, and H. J. (Henry Jeffers) Speissegger, and one sister, Mrs. E. A. Eason (Cordelia H. Speissegger, wife of Edward Augustus Eason), in Savannah, Ga.

The body of the late R. T. Speissegger will be laid to rest in the family cemetery at Moultrie, near Fort Peyton, Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock. R. A. Ponce is the funeral director.
