Floyd E. Ford Sr. of Overland Park, Kan., formerly of Quapaw, Ok., went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, Nov. 22, 2008.
Mr. Ford was born on the family farm in Clifty, Ark., on Oct. 13, 1916, to Everett O. and Leta Bell (Ellis) Ford.
Growing up during the Depression, he held a variety of jobs before becoming a driver for Santa Fe Trucking Lines and later became a bus driver for Continental Trailways for more than 30 years.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy on the USS San Francisco as a gunner and saw action in the South Pacific. The ship and its crew were involved in the invasion of Wake Island and the invasion of Guadalcanal.
He married Ruth Smalley on Sept. 27, 1943.
While continuing to drive for Continental Trailways, he was ordained a minister in 1961 and became the pastor for the First Christian Church of Quapaw, Ok. He served as pastor for 20 years before retiring, but remained active in the church until he moved to Overland Park following the death of his wife, Ruth, in 2002. During his tenure in Quapaw, he led many people to Christ. He worked tirelessly for the church as well as the community.
As a member of the Quapaw Volunteer Fire Department for 18 years, he was successful in spearheading the raising of funds to purchase the town's first ambulance. He also led efforts in securing funds for the purchase of a kidney dialysis machine for a Quapaw resident who was in need of the equipment and a kidney transplant for another Quapaw citizen.
He is survived by his children, Vicki Lee Farnsworth and husband, Dallas, of St. Louis, Mo., Butch Ford and wife, Allison of Overland Park, Kan., and Debbie Jolene Todd and husband, Burt, of Butte, Mont.; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Ruby Burnett of Wichita, Kan., and two brothers, Jack Ford of Wichita, Kan., and Bob Ford of California.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Dixie Lee Banzitt.
Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2008, at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery.
