R.W. Boisseau earned his medical degree from the University of Virginia in 1856. On the twentieth day of January 1858, he married Marion E. Barnes.

He joined the 4th Virginia Cavalry and was promoted to sergeant. On 2/25/1862 he was discharged from the troop by a Surgeon's Certificate. By August of 1862, he was serving at Winder Hospital in Richmond as an assistant surgeon.
In February of 1864 he was with the First Virginia. On June 25th 1864 a shell took his right arm at the Battle of Nance's Shop. In December, he resigned. He resumed the practice of medicine in Amelia, his office was at the courthouse village for many years.
