HAZEL (CAIN) MCHATTEN

MASARDIS - Hazel (Cain) McHatten, 74, died April 24, 1996, at a Presque Isle hospital. She was born July 17, 1921, in Masardis to Dow and Alice (Orr) Caine. She married Lynwood McHatten on July 30, 1944, and he predeceased her in 1984.

She attended schools in Masardis and Ashland and enjoyed playing basketball as a young woman and maintained her interest in the sport throughout her life. Upon graduation from high school, she remained in the area and worked at the Presque Isle Air Force Base during World War II.

She spent the first 20 years of her married life as a homemaker, mother, and worked with her brother, Clifford Cain at his grocery store and restaurant in Masardis.

During those years, she was active in Masardis Congregational Church, local PTA and the Masardis Womens Auxilary. She was an active member of the Eastern Star Tillikum Chapter No. 99, holding various offices from March of 1952 until the time of her death.

For several years during the 1960s and 1970s, she was a teacher`s assistant at the Masardis Elementary working with special needs children. In 1973, she went to work for the Aroostook County Area Agency for the Aging.

Hazel touched many of the community`s elderly through her advocacy, leadership, tireless work and compassion. She was also an active member of the Ashland Senior Citizens Club and a member of the Board of Directors of the Aroostook Valley Health Center.

She is survived by her three sons and their wives, Lynwood L. and Penelope of Ashland, John M. and Annie of Frankfort, and Clifford R. and Lynn of Winthrop. She has seven grandchildren that loved her and will miss her greatly. They are Matthew and his wife Kelly, Marcey, Tyson, Ethen, Michael and Lauren McHatten. Also surviving are two brothers, John and Frederick Cain and their wives, Mona and Sharon, all of Masardis; two special cousins, Jacque MacDermott of Bangor and Ella Gaudet of Winterport; two sisters-in-law, Lola DeLong and Gladys Cain, both of Presque Isle and a special niece, Dorothy Lavway of Presque Isle. She was predeceased by two brothers, Clair and Clifford Cain.

Hazel was devoted to and treasured by her family and friends. Hazel`s community work touched many, making others feel a sense of self-worth. Giving them an inner peace and happiness was her gift. Hazel had a spirit for life that will live on in the people she touched and all that loved her.
