Fred's 1st wife was Nora (Ziegler) Applegate, (1879-1939), who is buried in the Versailles Cemetery, Versailles, Woodford Co., KY.. They were divorced by 1920 and she was living in Versailles with their children. [She calls herself a widow in 1930, but other records indicate Fred was still living back in Illinois.
He was in Lawrence Co., IL for the WWII draft. I don't know when he married Clyde, or what her maiden name was. [One good indication this is the right Fred O Applegate: his obit was apparently published on Sept,19,1953,(according to the Wabash Valley Obit Index), which fits with the Sept.17,1953 death date].
