Adam David Birely

Ill for over a week with pneumonia, Adam D. Birely, a retired business man of Ladiesburg, this county, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. P. D. Koons, of Detour, where he had gone, when he was first attacked with grip.

Mr. Birely was aged 76 years, 1 month and 16 days and was well known in the upper section of the county, where he had lived his entire life.

Mr. Birely was born in Woodsboro district, the son of Frederick and Savilla Birely, deceased. He attended the public schools of that section. At the age of 17 years he began the milling trade at the William Annan mill, Detour.

Mr. Birely later operated different mills on Big and Little Pipe creeks, and in 1861 he turned his attention to agriculture, going to live on one of his father's farm where he remained for six years. He then rented the White Hill mill property for one year. The following two years he spent at Buckey mill on Little Pipe creek. In 1869 Mr. Birely purchased the home farm.

After 17 years on the farm, he removed to Ladiesburg, where he engaged in the merchandise business. After building Mr. Birely took into partnership his two sons, changing the name of the firm to A. D. Birely & Sons.

Mr. Birely was at one time president of the Board of Directors of the Woodsboro and Double Pipe Creek Turnpike Company.

In politics Mr. Birely was a Democrat. He was a member of A. F. and A. Masons and I. O. O. F.

Besides his wife, the following children survive: Mrs. Peter D. Koons, Detour; Elmer B., Finkle H., and William F. Birely, of Ladisburg; Jesse C. Birely, New Oxford, Pa.; Merton Adam Birely, Thurmont; Clarence E. Birely, Philadelphia. He also leaves two brothers, John R. of Illinois, and Thomas Birely, of New Midway.

The funeral will be held on Saturday, leaving the house at 12 o'clock with services in Haugh's church conducted by Rev. Poffenbarger. Interment in the cemetery adjoining. M. L. Creager and Son, of Thurmont, are the funeral directors.

He and wife Serepta Jane Otto had nine children, many of whom left the area. Their farm comprised 134 Ac of the tracts "Resurvey on Welsh Cabin", "Seventh Division and Long Snake". Adam was President of the Woodsboro and Double Creek Turnpike Association.
