Eugene J. "Gene" Steber, 88, of Olney, died at 10:20 p.m. Saturday, November 29, 2008, at Burgin Manor in Olney.
Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at Summers-Kistler Funeral Home in Olney. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Olney with Rev. Father Jerry Wirth officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Olney.
Mr. Steber was born on April 21, 1920, in Richland County, the son of Ed and Mary (Blank) Steber.
He married Virginia Buerster on October 16, 1945. She survives.
He owned and operated Gene Steber Excavating Service for 34 years, retiring in 1980. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Olney and Knights of Columbus in Olney.
Mr. Steber is survived by his wife of 63 years, Virginia Steber, of Olney; daughter, Carol Hahn and her husband, Henry, of McLeansboro; daughter, Connie Brinkley and her husband, David, of Olney; son, Ed Steber and his wife, Jane, of Charleston; son, Mike Steber and his wife, Norma, of Olney; son, Steve Steber and his wife, Susie, of Olney; son, Randy Steber and his wife, Cecilia, of Olney; daughter, Chris Schuetz and her husband, Wayne, of Olney; daughter, Becky Gilmore and her husband, Bob, of Franklin, Tenn.; daughter, Bev Doan and her husband, Bill, of Jackson, Mo.; son, Ken Steber and his wife, Lisa, of Olney; 25 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Jeanne Steber Stark; son in law, Jerome Stark; brothers and sisters, Elmer Steber, Arlene Jones, Jim Steber and Cleora Stevens; and grandson, Robbie Steber.
