Leon Childress, 68, formerly of Oceana, died Sunday at his home in Deland, Florida, apparently of a heart attack.

Born October 18, 1914, in Richlands, Virginia, he was the son of the late William Nathaniel and Epsie Lou Underwood Childress.

Mr. Childress was a 43 year resident of Wyoming County, a former general mine foreman for Eastern Associated Coal Company, the Kopperston Mine Division, a past president of the Wyoming County Board of Education, a member of Toneda Missionary Baptist Church, and the Pineville Masonic Lodge No. 126.

Mr. Childress also attended the Stetson Baptist Church in Deland, Florida

He was preceded in death by a brother, Cas Childress, and a half sister, Alma Lambert.

Survivors include his wife, Nan Matney Childress, a daughter, Betty Davidson, of Deland, Florida. Two sons, Richard Childress, and Paul Childress of Virginia; a half brother, Hamilton Childress of Youngstown, Ohio, a half sister, Thelma Kirk of Kingsport, Tennessee, and four grandchildren.

Services will be Wednesday at 11:00AM in the Toneda Missionary Baptist Church with the Reverend Roy Lester officiating. Burial will be in the Palm Memorial Gardens cemetery, at Matheny, West Virginia
