John William Wheeler was born in Tennessee and was a son of William Ira or Ide Wheeler (6/30/1827-2/17/1866), born in Georgia and Jane Cole (7/29/1828-8/24/1872), born in Tennessee. Jane Cole was a daughter of Eli Cole and Hester Fincher.

The children of William I. Wheeler and Jane Cole were;
1. John William Wheeler
2. Elizabeth Ann Wheeler (2/2/1853-1855)
3. Georgia Ann Wheeler (6/12/1856-?)
4. Rufus Wheeler (5/18/1858-1936)
5. Jefferson D. Wheeler (8/4/1861-?)
6. Mary J. Wheeler (12/14/1863-3/20/1866)
7. Robert D. Wheeler (10/6/1865-1946?)

John W. Wheeler worked in the Klondyke. (Source: John's grandson, Thomas Oren Wheeler.)

John Wheeler was first married to Martha Jane George. They had children;
1. James William Wheeler (1872-1940)
2. Thomas Oscar Wheeler (1874-1955)
2. Margaret "Maggie" Martha Jane Wheeler (1876-1909) m. William Albert Ritter.

James W. Wheeler was born in 1872 near Van Alstyne which is near Jacksboro, Texas. The following account speaks of that area at that time. Also, Wheeler family notes (shown on memorial page of Jane Cole Wheeler 1828-1872) are written on stationary with the heading of Jacksboro National Bank.
"July 12, 1874, Near Jacksboro, Texas, Kiowas confront Texas Rangers commanded by Maj. John B. Jones, killing two Rangers: David Bailey and William Glass." (True West Magazine, October 2004, page 23.)

Martha Jane (George) Wheeler died at Sherman, Texas on July 31, 1877. The exact location of her burial was not shown in family records.

John W. Wheeler was next married to Sue Bell Gumm on September 7, 1880, but the location was not mentioned.
Wheeler family notes list 3 following children of this marriage;

1. Ira Ray Wheeler, born Aug. 13, 1883, died Aug. 30, 1883.
2. Jesse Jake "Jack" Wheeler, born Jan. 26, 1886, died Aug. 14, 1964. Apparently the same person shown in The California Death Index as;
John P. Wheeler, born Jan. 26, 1886, died Aug. 4, 1964 in San Diego, mother's maiden name, Gumm.
3. Benjamin I. Wheeler, born May 1890, died Mar. 11, 1896.

Note: John Wheeler's name was mistakenly shown as M. A. Wheeler. From the L. A. Times newspaper dated March 22, 1931;

"Car Victim Succumbs In Hospital - Jeweler's Injury Fatal; Citizens Capture Woman Accused of Hitting Boy - Struck by an automobile on the 5th inst., M. A. Wheeler, 80 years of age, a retired jeweler of 1104 Coronado Terrace, died yesterday morning at the General Hospital. An inquest will be conducted at the Coroner's office at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow.
The accident occurred at Sunset Boulevard and Alvarado street. The automobile which hit Wheeler was driven by Al Lundgren of 1740 Silver Lake Terrace, according to police."
