Mary Alexia Stone Brister, 86, died Sunday, November 30, 2008, at Compere's Nursing Home.

Private graveside services were held at Cedar Lawn Cemetery today at 10 am.

Mary was born December 21, 1921, on Rose Hill Plantation outside of Bentonia, the youngest child of Andrew Alexis Stone and Mary Brown Hatcher Stone.

After her father's death in 1925, she lived with her family in Nashville and Columbus, MS, before moving to Jackson, where her mother was Professor of English and Dean of Women at Millsaps College. Mary attended Millsaps, graduating in 1942 with a double degree in English and French. She was a member of Chi Omega and was voted Miss Millsaps of 1942.

In 1947, she married Harris H. Brister, who died in 1974.

They lived in Gautier, where Mary became close friends with the Walter Anderson family. Upon returning to Jackson after a time in Memphis, she worked for Shell Oil, then moved to First Federal, later known as Unifirst. Mary worked there until her retirement in the mid 80's.

She was a former member of the Jr. League of Jackson, a longtime communicant of the Cathedral of St. Andrew, and a founding member of Friends of Walter Anderson, as well as a volunteer and patron of various arts and educational groups.

Mary is predeceased by her parents; brother, Dr. Joseph H. Stone of Vicksburg; and sister, Ann S. Riley of Sweeney, TX.

She is survived by a sister-in-law; two nieces; a nephew; and several cousins.
