Exum Whitley, Esq. was born in Edgecombe Co., NC, on August 7, 1784, the son of Jonas Barnes Whitley and wife Rachel [Taylor] Whitley. About 1805, in Edgecombe Co., NC, Exum married Temperance [Stallings], the daughter of Willis & Delilah Stallings. Exum moved by 1805 to Smith Co., TN. He served as a Smith Co. Justice of the Peace, and in May, 1836, was elected Chair of the Justice Court for Smith Co.
The children of Exum and Temperance [Stallings] Whitley were:

Josiah S. Whitley (1809-1839)
William Bennett Whitley (1812-1889)
Serena Temperance [Whitley] Mason (1823-1894)

Exum Whitley died on July 20, 1841, Smith Co., TN.
