George Washington Cornwell was born 8 March 1808 in Jasper Co GA, the tenth child of Elijah Cornwell and Catherine Cavender Cornwell. He married Eliza Dawkins Lane, the daughter of William Dawkins Lane and Elizabeth White Lane of Putnam Co, GA. Their home on land near the Alcovy adjoined that of his mother and was near his brothers Obadiah and Elija, Jr. From here he directed farm operations in Jasper and Newton Counties.

He represented Jasper Co in the State Legislature in 1855. For several years he and his brother Obadiah maintained a school for children of their families which was also attended by students from the families of relatives in DeKalb Co. He was an early and active member of the Bethelem Baptist Church located near Hardys Crossroads. He died 5 January 1863 and Eliza died June 1875 -- they are buried at the Old Cornwell Cemetery. There were seven children: Gibson Hill, William Dawkins, Mary Jane, Davis Lane, An Elizabeth, Adeline F. and Lenora V. (The History of Jasper Co, GA)
