Barbara's childhood was filled with difficulties. Her mom, Laura Ellen (Garrison) Whilkins Ashcraft had Grand Mal Seizures since her youth. This affected her mom's ability to have good relationships with her friends and family, to hold a job, and be a responsible mother. So Barbara was left with various family members through out her childhood.
On the 1940 U.S. CENSUS, Barbara is 7 years old and living with her grandmother, Annie Claire (Swearingen) Garrison in the home that her grandmother owned on 407 N. Daughtery Street in Eastland, Eastland County, Texas (Precinct 1). The census also shows that five years earlier when Barbara was only two she was living in Clinton, Oklahoma, which would have been with her mom and her dad, Lee Crow Whilkins. Her parents had met out in California where her dad had bit parts in movies as an American Indian. Her mom was there because she had won a beauty contest and was taken to Hollywood to try out for acting roles. Her mom was a typist and had chosen to extend her time in Hollywood using her typing skills. After Barbara's birth, her parents moved to his hometown, Clinton, Oklahoma. When Barbara was only 3 yrs old, her mom divorced her dad, whom her mom called an alcoholic, and they returned to Texas. Her mom often recited the saying
"Lips that touch wine will never touch mine!"
Barbara was only 16 years old when she married Leonard Oquin Prophit. He loved her very much. Barbara had much anger and was quite reclusive due to her difficult childhood, but Leonard was always understood and his love never wavered. He felt blessed to be married to this beautiful woman. They had 6 children, but one son, William, died at birth. Their 5 living children are Catherine, Sally, Leonard, Norman and James.
