Began teaching school in 1853.

Served as a Pvt. in Co 'F' 16th Bn Ga Cavalry (State Guards) during the Civil War.

He was a faithful minister of the Methodist church for over 20 years ministering in Gilmer, Murray, Gordon, Dawson, Pickens, and Fannin counties from 1867-1889.

He was married three times. To (1) Rhoda K. Sharp, (2) Permilla Triplett on July 7, 1869, and (3) Nancy J. Mathis November 27, 1880 (in Murray Co. Georgia).

He lived in the Mountaintown district (Gilmer Co.) then moved to the town of Ellijay in later life before passing away in 1891.
