He was united in wedlock to Martha Jane Phillips in 1874. to this union was born five children, Roberta Hagerty and Howard Conwell who reside in St. Louis, Mo., Lewis Conwell of Potwin, Edith Shepard of Hamilton, and Leona Conwell deceased.
He was engaged in the merchantile business also agriculture and stock raising, until the fall of 1881 when he came to Janesville Township Greenwood County, Kans. Locating eight miles northeast of Hamilton he engaged extensively in sheep raising. The next few years were rather lean years for new settlers that were continually arriving and he always stood with a ready hand and a hearty welcome and in many cases rendered material aid to these people in their struggles for homes. He was, for several consecutive years, trustee for Janesville Township and he had a wide acquaintance among the earlier settlers. He also served with the 5th Missouri Regiment during the Spanish American War. After moving to Hamilton he dealt in live stock for a number of years and with the exception of three years spent in Arizona, lived here until his death Nov. 24, 1919.
Four of the children with their mother and one sister, Lucy E. Conwell of St. Louis, survive to mourn the loss of a kind and loving husband, father and brother.
