Private William Henry Swanson was a casualty of the Vietnam War. As a member of the Army Selective Service, and a draftee, PVT Swanson served our country until May 11th, 1969 in Pleiku, South Vietnam. He was 20 years old and was not married. It was reported that William died from multiple fragmentation wounds from a mine. His body was recovered. William was born on July 2nd, 1948 in Nashville, Tennessee. PVT Swanson is on panel 25W, line 056 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. He served our country for less than a year.
He served with Alpha Company, 3rd Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, USARV.
He was awarded The Combat Infantryman's Badge(CIB), The Purple Heart Medal for his combat related wounds, The Vietnam Service Medal, The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Service Medal, The National Defense Service Medal and The Good Conduct Medal.
He was killed killed in action at Pleiku on May 11, 1969 that took the lives of five other men in his company:
