John was a soldier in the French and Indian war. He enlisted in 1758, was 5 feet 6 inches in height, had light hair and eyes and dark complexion. He also was a soldier on the American side in the Revolution. He leased a farm from Frederick Philipse in Tarrytown, New York, comprising 160 acres. After the Revolution, he purchased the land from the Commisioners of Forfeitures. Upon the property stood on the east side of and near Broadway a stone building in which was kept, prior to, and after the Revolution, a tavern. The old house was torn down in the mid 1890's to make way for the public school building called "Washington Irving High School".
