Son of Johannes Van Tassel and Tryntje Catherine Buys Van Tassel.
Married Esther Van Tassel 1764 in Sleepy Hallow.
Children were Eleanor, William,Jacob and Isaac.
His sister, Annatze 'Annatie' Van Tassel married Jacob Van Wormer.

Inscription on the stone:
" This simple stone points to the honorable grave,
Where sleeps the Patriot pure,the Soldier brave.
Reader, if to thy heart thy country's cause be dear.
His service call to mind; this grave revere."

At the commencement of the Revolution he was a farmer living in Greensburgh which was two miles south of Tarrytown.

He enlisted in 1776 and preformed various services as a private, sergeant, then commissioned second lietenant in the company commanded by Captain George Combs.

Jacob Van Tassel was placed in command of a detachment of six privates and they went down the Hudson River to obtain information relative to the movements of the Brittish. On the return river trip the house in which he was lodging for the night, located in the vicinity of Croton River, was surrounded by the Brittish on July 1, 1779. He was taken prisoner, carried to New York City and held in the ;old jail' for four or five weeks.His home was burned and destroyed during his imprisonment. Getting information to Skinner (commissary of american prisoners, he was placed on parole and sent to Flatbrush, Long Island. He remained on parole until Nov 27, 1781, when he was exchanged. He then continued in service until the end of the Revolution.
