He died Friday morning after taking poison. His daughter Vernal happened to go to his house, and noticed that he was 'breathing heavily' so she hurried to the home of her aunt Mrs. Peter T. Knight. Drs. Fogarty and Maloney were summoned but he died at a little after noon. He left no note, but it was thought that ill health (asthma made worse by the hurricane) was the cause. He left a widow and six children. Three boys, Eugene, Clyde and Jefferson and three girls, Mrs. Jose Pelaez, Mrs. George Parks, Vernel. Peter T. Knight was his brother.
The funeral was under the auspices of the Fraternal Order of Eagles with pallbearers selected from that organization: E.W. Russell, E. M. Semple, T.A. Sweeting, Walter W. Thompson, Louis Fine and Marcy B. Darnell. Hon. E. M. Semple delivered the eulogy for the Eagles and Rev. Stout conducted the services for the Episcopal church
