Ruth Akins, 102, of Canyon, formerly of Happy, died Sunday, Dec. 7, 2008.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Brooks Funeral Directors Chapel with the Rev. Rick Mitchell, the Rev. Kevin Akins and the Rev. Damon Akins officiating. Private burial will be in Wayside Cemetery in Wayside.

Ruth Akins was born April 10, 1906, in Wildorado, Okla., to Thomas and Elizabeth Henderson Knox. She married Olen Luther Akins on Dec. 23, 1926, at Wayside. He preceded her in death on Oct. 5, 1973. She was an Avon sales representative for more than 20 years in Happy and was fondly known as "Mom Akins" to the youth in the area.

She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Wilma Beth; three brothers; and four sisters.

Survivors include two sons, Olen Charles Akins and wife Della of Tyler and Tom Edwin Akins and wife Lori of Happy; two sisters, Mary Jo Salter and Faye Wagner, both of Amarillo; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials be to Wayside Cemetery Association, P.O. Box 155, Wayside, TX 79094; or Canyon Health Care, 15 Hospital Drive, Canyon, TX 79015.
