Roy M. Polkinghorne, 92, Aitkin, died Dec. 7, 2008, at the Riverwood Healthcare Center in Aitkin.

Roy was born Oct. 23, 1916, at Littlefork, the son of Earnest and Maude (Foster) Polkinghorne. He grew up and attended schools in Littlefork and graduated from high school there. He then worked for the Minnesota Department of Transportation. He married Doris J. Valsvik on Jan. 1, 1942, at International Falls. He then served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was in the Battle of the Bulge. Upon his discharge in 1946, he returned home and then went to work as an automotive mechanic for Harold's Chevrolet in Minneapolis. He worked for them until 1975 when he retired. He and Doris lived in Minneapolis until 1978, at which time they moved to the Aitkin area and lived on Nord Lake prior to moving into town in 2002. Roy enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, cutting wood and just being outdoors in nature. He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Aitkin, the Aitkin VFW and American Legion Posts. He had served as a Boy Scout leader.

He is survived by his wife Doris Polkinghorne, Aitkin; son, Ralph Polkinghorne, Los Alamos, N.M.; daughter, Ann Greer, Indianapolis, Ind.; grandchildren and their spouses, Jason and Thuy Greer; Amy and Douglas Williams; and Brian and Amanda Greer; brothers and sisters-in-law, Bruce and Violet Polkinghorne, Littlefork; Clyde and Mary Polkinghorne, Warren, Mich.; and sister, Lorene Haaversen, Bemidji.

He was preceded in death by his parents Earnest and Maude; step-mother Margarette; and brothers, Jack, George and Harold.

A memorial service will be held Thu., Dec. 11, at 11 a.m. from First Lutheran Church in Aitkin with the Rev. Lance Isaacson officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the church. Military honors will be provided by the Aitkin VFW and American Legion Posts. Interment will be in the spring at the Oakley Cemetery at Littlefork.
