Grand Master of N.D. Masons 1906-07.
Grant Sherman Hager was born in Rome, Oneida County, New York, on June 7, 1865 to Jacob and Margaret Hager and completed courses in Rome Free Academy, in June 1882. He attended Hamilton College in New York, but dropped out because of poor health. In August 1883, he arrived in St Thomas, Dakota Territory, in search of improved health. He engaged in the publication of the St. Thomas Times, which had been established the previous year by his brother Jacob P. Hager. The two brothers entered into a partnership for the publication of the North Dakota Sun, at Elgin, Cavalier County and the Pembina County Tribune at Neche. The partnership was terminated in 1885. The publication of the Sun and the Tribune were not profitable ventures and were suspended. Grant's brother Jacob moved to Willow City, and founded the 'North Dakota Eagle', while Grant continued publication of the St. Thomas Times, until 1908 when he purchased the Walsh County Record, at Grafton, which he continued to publish until shortly before his death on April 6, 1923. Six months before his death, Grant had formed an association with (PGM) Rilie Morgan. After Hager's death Morgan continued to edit the paper and became owner and publisher.
In St. Thomas, Hager, on reaching his majority, became township clerk and was justice of the peace of St. Thomas Township. Later he was city auditor and police magistrate in St. Thomas. He was also clerk of the school district and was appointed postmaster. He was appointed Colonel, as personal aide to Governor A. H. Burke. In the midst of all his other duties he found time to study law and was admitted to the Bar in 1894. He served as the assistant state's attorney in Pembina County in 1897.
On May 22, 1895 he married Alice S. Clemmer in Dickinson ND.
On September 10, 1887, Brother Grant Hager was made a Mason in Crescent Lodge No 11, at Grafton and in 1889 became a Charter member and first Master of Temple Lodge No. 30 at St. Thomas. He remained a member of his home lodge until the time of his death in 1925. He received the Chapter and Knight Templar degrees in Grand Forks and was a Charter member of both the Chapter and Commandery in Grafton. In the 1890's he joined El Zagal Shrine Temple in Fargo and was a Charter member of Kem Temple, when that body was established in Grand Forks. In 1902 he was appointed Senior Grand Deacon of the Grand Lodge by Grand Master Stockwell, and subsequently became Grand Master in 1906. Following this, he was appointed Fraternal Correspondent, a post he held until his death.
