Sarah was the youngest daughter of Edward & Sarah (Dilts) Dulin and she grew up on a family farm in Concord Township, Delaware County, OH. On January 12, 1866, Sarah was married to Zenas Hayes (a.k.a. "Hays") in Franklin County, OH. Zenas was the son of Zacharia & Rebecca Hayes of Dublin, Franklin County, OH. It is unclear what became of this marriage but, on April 25, 1869, Sarah was married to David M. McMenis in Hardin County, OH. Sarah & David appear on the 1870 Federal Census living in the town of Kenton, Hardin County, OH, with a ten-year-old child named Alice McMenis, who was apparently a child of David's by a previous marriage. Thirty-six-year-old David then listed his occupation as "retired saloon keeper." Sarah & David were recorded on the 1880 Federal Census (indexed under the erroneous surname of "McMinins") again living in the town of Kenton. David's daughter Alice was still living with them along with a two-year-old adopted son named John McMenis. David then listed his occupation as "teamster."
