Rev. Joseph Melvin Smithhart
Rev. Joseph Smithhart, 69, of Terre Haute, a retired bishop of the United Brethren in Union Church died Wednesday (5 September 1951) evening at St. Anthony's Hospital of injuries suffered in a head-on collision earlier Wednesday, of automobiles north of Fairbanks on State Road 63.
His wife, Mrs. Dora Smithhart, 58, a passenger in the car, was reported in fair condition by hospital attaches today. She is being treated for cuts on the head and face and bruises on her legs and body.
Paul R. Ireland, 39, Palestine, IL; driver of the other car is in the Mary Sherman Hospital at Sullivan, where he is being treated for cuts on both legs. His condition is not believed to be serious.
Rev. Smithhart was driving north when the accident happened. State Policeman William Maxwell & Sullivan County Sheriff, Hubert Waggoner, investigated the accident.

Smithhart, who lived at 717 North Fourteenth Street, is survived by his wife; 4 sons, Bernie Smithhart, Peoria, IL; Joseph Smithhart, Marion; Herschel Smithhart, Brazil & Ervin Smithhart, Terre Haute; 2 step daughters, Mrs. Virginia McCullough, Terre Haute & Mrs. Letha Whitner, West Terre Haute; a stepson, Roy Blythe, Patricksburg; 2 brothers, Edgar Smithhart, Evansville & Allen Smithhart, Reads, KY & a sister Mrs. Mary Richardson, Mitchell.
The body was taken to the Gillis Memory Chapel. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park.
