Annie May was the youngest of five children of David and Lizzie Kinkade. She was born in Mendocino, California and lived there until she was six years old and the family moved to Washington state. She was 21 when she married. She and Bert Thomas had one son, Earl, who was nicknamed "Mickey." They lived in Snohomish in 1900 with her sister Nora and niece, Edith Cowger.

May married James Bailes in June 1904 when her son was about six years old. She was listed as a widow. They lived in Hoquiam, Grays Harbor, Washington. Two postcards she sent her mother are in the possession of Doris Kinkade Shones of Tacoma. The first was postmarked Nov. 17, 1910 Castlerock and reads: "Dear Mother I will send you a picture of the new bridge that is in front of our house and that is the boat that runs here. May". The second postcard is a birthday greeting dated Feb. 1, 1924 from Hoquiam: "Dear Mother. Wish I could be with you on your birthday. I all ways think of you if I am far away and I hope you are well. Lots of Love, May."

HOQUIAM, May 28.-(Special) - Funeral services for Mrs. Anna May Bailes, 72, long-time Hoquiam resident who died in an Aberdeen hospital yesterday, will be in the Pinnick-Coleman chapel at 1 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. Rev. Ellis B. Harris will officiate and interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park.
Mrs. Bailes, born at Mendocino, Calif., came to Hoquiam 35 years ago. She lived at 912 Smith avenue and was a member of the Helping Hand club. Her death came after a long illness.
Surviving are her husband, James Bailes, and son, Earl Thomas, both of Hoquiam; a granddaughter, Mrs. Alberta Jezek, Hoquiam; great-granddaughter, Joan Jezek, Hoquiam; sister, Mrs. W. C. Wright, Ellensburg; brother, Rowl Kinkaid, Ellensburg, and several nieces and nephews.
