Hyrum Henry Hirschi of Afton died suddenly March 7, 1979 in Santa Maria, California, of a massive coronary. Funeral services were held March 10,, in the Afton LDS Second Ward conducted by Bp. J. Allen Lowe.
Burial was in the Afton Cemetery.
Hirschi was born Jan 6, 1909, in Montpelier, Idaho to Raynold and Freida (Messerli) Hirschi who were Swiss immigrants. He was one of 14 children.
He spent the first years of his life in Montpelier and then the family moved to Geneva, Idaho, where he finished the eighth grade. He lived his early youth on the farm with his family and many stories are recalled of the three-mile walk to school and of being known as the "Potato Kings".
He attended Utah State University for two years where he studied auto mechanics. He was called on an LDS Mission and served from 1930 to 1933 in Switzerland and Germany where his dual citizenship of the United States and Switzerland proved a valuable asset during the war years.
In 1939, he met a school teacher from Montpelier, Idaho named Kathryn Grosjean. Hy married her on Sept 10, 1937 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple and moved shortly thereafter to Star Valley. which has been their home. The couple raised a family of three girls and three boys.
In the Depression years, Hy and Kay operated a small grocery store in Osmond, and Hy sheared sheep in the spring. In 1942 he started driving a gas tanker for Reuel Call which he continued to do until 1952 when he took over the Sinclair Service Station.
Two years later, Hy and Kay purchased the H and H Sporting Goods Store, and in 1965 purchased Mrs Sperels' floral business.
In 1968 they sold the station and built a modern floral shop and greenhouse on the land adjacent to their home, where Hy built a boardwalk connecting the two buildings.
For more than 25 years Hy and Kay provided floral arrangements and services for the people of Star Valley. On Feb 15, 1979 the Hirschis sold their business and retired.
Hy had always been active in the church and the community. He was a High Priest and had served as 1st and 2nd counselor in the Sunday School superintendency. He was a home teacher, Sunday School teacher, a Scoutmaster and served on the Scout Commission. He was on the Stake MIA board, was a long-time member of the Afton water board and a member and past president of the Afton Lions Club. He was an active choir member and had served as president of the choir.
Hy loved the mountains and the outdoors. He was known throughout the valley for his hunting, fishing and guiding abilities.
After his retirement, Hy seemed to feel an urgency to see each of his children and did so.
