He entered the U. S. Army on Jan. 17, 1942. He served with the Cannon Company, 39th Infantry, 9th Division. He was involved in operation Torch, the Invasion of North Africa, Algeria, French Morocco, Tunisia and Central Europe.
He was captured Feb. 22, 1943, by General Romel forces in the Casarene Pass, Tunisia, North Africa.
He spent two years and two months in various German Prision Camps an was involved in a death march.
He was liberated on April 12, 1945, at Tangermunde, Germany by the Fifth Armored Division and was discharged on Aug. 1, 1945.
He married Lillian Hancock at Phillipsburg, Kan. Feb. 12, 1946
