Ray was the third of five children. On April 5, 1906, he married Bessie Whitmire at Briar Creek, Columbia County, Pennsylvania. The ceremony was performed by Rev. John K. Adams. The couple raised eight children: Dorothy, Harriet, Henry, Richard, Marian, Margaret, Carl, and Jane. He was employed for more than thirty years at the American Car and Foundry Company in Berwick, Columbia County, Pennsylvania.
