Joel Thomas Cramblit

John Thomas Cramblit was born in Vinton county, near the city of McArthur January 14, 1862. He was the second son of John and Sophia Cramblit and came with his parents to Iowa in the autum of 1865, settling on a farm near Munterville, where he lived with his parents until he was 19 years old. He then went to Wisconsin and Missouri for a time; returning to the old home in the spring of 1886. He and a younger borther leased the farm and farmed it for a year.

In the apring of 1888 he was married to Sarah Ellen Canfield. To them were born in 1889 a daughter, who died at the age of five months; Eliza, August 20, 1890, Clarence, December 8, 1891, and who died 10 hours before his father and Gladys, December 7, 1901.

Circumstances of Death

The circumstances surrounding the deaths of this father and son are peculiarly sad. On Saturday, April 25, Joel Cramblitt went out to his field to help his 17-year old son. While directing the boy, Mr. Cramblitt was seized with a sudden illness. Clarence at once sent for a doctor and on returning home was attacked with rheumatism of the heart. All the medical skill and human hands could do, was done but with no avail his condition growing worse and his sufferings so great as to never be forgotten by those that administered to him.

His suffering grew more intense until Friday at 5 p.m., when he sank into a stupor and passed away at 7 p.m. May 1.

The father's condition had now become so serious that it was deemed best not to tell him of his son's death, and Mr. Cramblitt passed away Saturday morning May 2 at 5 o'clock not knowing that his son was dead.

Beside his wife and son and daugter, Mr. Cramblitt leaves six brothers and two sisters, an aged father and mother, and numerous relatives and friends to mourn his demise.
