Ernest was the older of two children and the only son. On the morning of November 25, 1937 he married Louise Muendlein at the Saint Paul's Lutheran Church in White Haven. Then the newlyweds drove to Allentown, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, to be witnesses at the wedding of his cousin, Daniel Oakes, in the afternoon. He and Louise raised one son, Robert John.

He worked for the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission as a a heavy equipment operator. He was also a self-employed mink farmer.
