Charles E. Caldwell, oldest son of A.J. and Elizabeth Caldwell, was born in Williamson County, near New Burnside on Sept. 29, 1873. Age 61 years, 1 month and 11 days. He spent most of his boyhood days in the village of New Burnside. At the age of 16 he joined the U. S. Army and was honorably discharged after two years of service. He was united in marriage with Lenora Bowman, of Rock, in Pope County, in the year of 1898. To this union were four children born. Two sons and two daughters, namely, Mrs. Della Smith, of Carbondale, Murrel, of Quincy, Joe of Rock, and Hazel Whalen, of Carbondale. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1909. He leaves to mourn his children, nine grandchildren, five sisters and two brothers, namely, Florence Phillips of New Burnside, Lulu and Bertie Wright, in Pope County, Orbie Caldwell, with the U. S. Army in Hawaiian Islands, Bessie Anderson, of Hollywood, Fla., Claude Caldwell, address unknown and Fay Taylor,of DeSoto, Ill.

At an early age he professed faith in Jesus Christ and joined the Baptist church of New Burnside.

He is buried beside his wife, Lenora in the Mt. Zion Cemetery, Rock, Pope County, IL.
