Preston was born March 9, 1911, to James and Lela (Layton) Abbott in Platte County, Mo. He was a member of the DeKalb Christian Church. In 1930 he married Gladys Boydston. He and Gladys farmed all their lives and lived in the DeKalb Community since 1943. At the age of 92 he moved to an assisted living home in St. Joseph and later to a nursing home in Savannah.
James Preston Abbott was preceded in death by his parents, James and Lela; wife of 64 years, Gladys; daughters, Janet Cline (2002), Darlene O'Rielly (2008), Vicki Patterson (2006) and an infant daughter; two infant great grandchildren, a son-in-law and two sisters.
He is survived by his son, Gerald P. Abbott (Georgia) of DeKalb; daughter, Joan Lombardino (Carl) of Kansas City; two sons-in-law, Ed O'Rielly and Robert Patterson, Kansas City; 14 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; eight great great-grandchildren; a niece and a nephew.
