DeWitt's birth date is listed as Oct 1, 1886 in the VA cemetery database, however his World War I draft registration card lists the date as Oct 1, 1890, and the 1900 census (Livingston Parish, LA) enumerates him as age 9, born September, 1890.

He was a son of Peter William Woodlief (b ca 1855) & Abbie Scott; he married Julia Courtney on 21 Feb 1918 in Livingston Co, LA.

Co B, 815 Pioneer Infantry, WORLD WAR IA humble, friendly, but reserved man, Thomas was the husband of Julia Woodlief. He was the son of Peter Woodlief, a mixed-race creole who was the first black certified instructor from Livingston Parish (his specialty being Agriculture). Thomas was a member of the Pioneer Infantry during World War I, and a carpenter in later years. He was a dedicated husband/father to his wife Julia, their thirteen children: Cherrie Woodlief Seales; Gloria Woodlief; Gladys Woodlief Ball; Eunice Woodlief Bruce Spears; Mattie Woodlief Winters; Jessie "Dee" Woodlief Wright; fraternal twins: Morris Woodlief, and Joyce Woodlief Lacewell; Donald Woodlief; Thomas Woodlief, Jr.; Peter Woodlief; Clyde Woodlief; and Leroy Woodlief.

Upon Thomas's death, many people felt that his wife Julia died from a broken her due to her passing on several months later.
