Rites Held For HG Businessman, J. W. Hammack

J. W. (Jake) Hammack, for over 40 years a prominent Honey Grove business, civic and church leader, died at 11:30 o'clock last Tuesday morning, January 22, 1980 in Wilson N. Jones Hospital in Sherman.

Ill for the past few months, Hammack had been in the hospital for two weeks at the time of his demise.

Hammack, with his wife, Thelma (Mutt), operated the Kold Kash Store located on the east side of the Honey Grove square for over forty years. They closed out the store and retired about a year ago. Hammack, throughout his lifetime was avidly interested in the community. The Hammack residence here is at 808 North 13th Street.

John William Hammack was born at Fort Towson, Oklahoma, August 7, 1910, the son of the late T. J. Hammack and Maggie Scruggs Hammack.

The older Hammack was a longtime Honey Grove dry goods merchant himself.

John William Hammack and his wife, in addition to the operation of the dry goods store here also ran a similar store in New Boston for a short time after World War II.

Hammack, a member and past master of the Honey Grove Masonic Lodge No. 164 A.F. & A.M., taught a Sunday School class at the First Christian Church here for many years. He also served the church as a deacon and was Sunday School superintendent for several years. He was a veteran of World War II, serving overseas in Europe. While he was in military service, Mrs. Hammack operated their dry goods business.

His wife is the former Thelma Richardson. They were married in Greenville on December 24, 1933.

Funeral services for Mr. Hammack were held at the Cooper-Sorrells Chapel at 10 o'clock last Thursday morning. The Rev. Edwin Gorom, minister of the First Christian Church and Maurice Neathery, Honey Grove Church of Christ minister, were officiants. Cooper-Sorrells directed interment in Oakwood Cemetery.

Named pallbearers were Floyd Burgess, Tom Shope, D. E. Shelton, Charles Ryser, Choice Moore, R. F. Voyer, Garland Stanford and Murray Jackson.

Survivors include his wife of the home; a daughter, Mrs. Don (Sandy) Morrison of Carrollton; two grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. Ed Hanson of Woodburn, Oregon and Mrs. Margaret Valentin of Delmar, Ca.
