Virginia was my mother-in-law, and the year in her obituary for her marriage to her first husband, Lt. Erwin Ewart, and his year of death are incorrect. She married Erwin in 1942, and he died in 1944, and the correct dates are shown on his memorial. Several years before her death, Virginia provided the date of her marriage to Erwin and the date of his death to our local funeral home to use in her obituary, and until I saw the different dates in Erwin's obituary, we had no reason to question her memory of them. I have since checked the archived newspapers of Carroll, Iowa, and verified that the dates in Erwin's obituary are the correct dates.

Virginia had a special interest in the history of Ottumwa, and for years she enjoyed giving programs to groups on this subject. She also had many fond memories of growing up on the Wind River Indian Reservation in Wyoming, where her father was a telegrapher, and she loved to reminisce about those years. Her first name was Lois, but she always went by her middle name of Virginia. (Written by the current owner of her memorial, djtruitt.)
