James was the 2nd of 9 children born to Daniel Brown (1744-1806) and Sarah Titus (1746-prior to 1820).He married Phebe Pedrick (1778-1850) on 10 Oct 1795 by Rev. Joshua Hartt, at Smithtown, New York. They had two children: Juliana Brown Beers (1808-1832) and James Crawford Brown (1809-1820).
